Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
