Seven accused members of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
