Our Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this work may look more like an arduous university examination rather than a new pop record by an artist whose last hit featured a global K-pop icon. Split into four distinct parts and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus investigating female mystery, religious ascent, and corporal change, frequently through the prism of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of contemporary artists look rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend overly intellectual chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and full praise going to the artist. Although this is not the first time project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, its scale are far higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she is tearing hearts apart, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This playful energy shines clearly during a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down with cartoonish force. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that you rarely quite understand—or even wish to predict—what you is going to next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally distinct place than where it began. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work starts out dark and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on the album is navigating the gap of radical innovation and broad appeal. This is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. That feat gets repeated by another powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried gems that requires patience to completely explore but never feels like a chore. While some major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
