The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
