2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Change Comes After Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct game identity.
The president stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is vast, having spent the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to persist seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
David
Background of the New Leader
Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year together with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as development advances.
